5.3 LS performance recipe guide.

Use this page to plan a 5.3 LS around common 400, 500, and 600 horsepower recipe ideas. The 5.3 is one of the best LS starting points because parts are easy to find, the stock engines respond well to camshaft changes, and the platform has a huge amount of dyno-tested information behind it.

These horsepower levels are based on dyno-tested LS recipe information and should be treated as planning targets. Dyno numbers depend on the exact engine, compression, camshaft, heads, intake, exhaust, fuel, tuning, and dyno setup.

Many published LS recipe numbers are engine dyno or flywheel-style numbers. Rear-wheel horsepower can easily be 100 to 150 horsepower lower after drivetrain loss, converter loss, accessory load, tire size, and vehicle setup.

Once a stock-bottom-end LS build gets past roughly 500 horsepower, reliability becomes much less forgiving and the engine can turn into what builders call a ticking time bomb if the foundation is ignored. Above 600 horsepower, the upgrades should extend past bearings and include careful machine-shop measurements, piston ring gap, stronger rods and pistons, crank inspection or upgrade planning, fuel system support, and professional tuning.

400 HP Target

5.3 LS9 camshaft 400 HP recipe

For a healthy 5.3 LS, the LS9 camshaft is the simple starting point for a 400 horsepower style recipe. It keeps the parts list short while still giving the engine a proven factory-performance cam profile.

500 HP Target

5.3 BTR Stage 1 cam and head combo

A stock-bottom-end 5.3 can reliably live around the 500 horsepower mark when the engine is healthy, but upgraded bearings from the 500 HP support package are still recommended. This recipe uses a BTR LS3 Stage 1 V2 camshaft, PAC 1219 springs, Trick Flow 215 heads, and a FAST LSXR intake to get the airflow needed for the target.

600 HP Target

5.3 stock-cam turbo 600 HP recipe

A 5.3 can make 600 horsepower with the stock camshaft when the turbo system, fuel system, and tune are right. If you want to push beyond that level, we recommend stepping up to the BTR LS Stage 2 Turbo cam, PAC 1219 springs, Trick Flow GenX 220 heads, and a FAST LSXR intake while building around the 600 HP+ support foundation instead of leaning harder on stock internals.

Do not chase power on a worn-out foundation.
